TEENAGERS AND THEIR ‘NATURAL’ CONNECTIONS

HAVE YOU EVER FELT YOUR FEET ON GRASS?

Houses earlier had small if not big courtyards, and people spent hours there. Be with the family, or
alone, or reading or doing a whole myriad of things. Nature was people’s ‘natural’ companion. They
don’t need an insta companion, they have the long-term nature as their partner.
Thanks to globalism, capitalism, consumerism and many more isms, we now spend a lot of time
cooped up in houses. The concept of nature is as alien as aliens themselves.
This exact predicament has got the teenagers what we might call “need to connect with the
environment or nature”. There are hundreds of insta stories that you might find on trekking, hiking
and doing meditation on apartment lawns to keep oneself healthy. Unfortunately, the sad these
stories are not from teenagers’ accounts. It is really sad as these are some of the activities that have
the ‘adrenaline’ that we teenagers talk about all the time.
Therefore, we must acknowledge this need to connect with nature.

OUR MOTHERS MIGHT ANNOY US, BUT NOT MOTHER NATURE!

A lot of us have sound apps and musical nature apps on our phones that put us to sleep but how
about that same sound without the headphones on. You could just look out of your window or just
sit in your balcony.
Experience the nature up close and personal!

A lot of teenagers are part of many environmental clubs. And even though there are a majority of us
that are into editing in landscape mode, a lot of us do admire the real landscape too!
There is as surveys shows, an increasing awareness of environment and nature in teenagers today.
Now, some also say that this has been pressurized on the teenagers. The schools have EVS exams
and classes. Even some of the colleges have environmental studies too. Some even have degrees
and post graduate degrees in it. These however are voluntary for teenagers to take up unlike the
classes and exams of EVS. Some teenagers feel that they are being burdened by the environmental
concerns and are expected to a lot of things for it and not advised on how. A lot of teenagers feel
that they being educated on the concerns but not on how to solve them. This pressurizing has
somewhere spoiled the joy of nature. We view it as our marks, or our group assignment that need to
be finished rather than a group’s individual effort to save the earth. Sometimes the teenagers are
held guilty for environmental concerns that are not the only participants of.

EVER HEARD SOMETHING CALLED AS THE NATURE DEFICIT DISORDER?

It is not yet cited in the books of medicine like DSM or ICD but it is being increasing debated as a
disorder. It is a condition where one lacks the feeling of being in nature and has consequences
because of that. These could be physical or mental. The lack of vitamin D or the increasing anxiety,
all have partial cures in the nature and are caused because of the scarcity of it.
Many parents these days are getting paranoid, that their kids might have these and how to deal with
it. I mean come on, the hours of Xbox and videos are kind of the precedence to this isn’t it?

The Guardian recently published an article that most teenagers are turning towards veganism and
vegetarianism.

Even though a partial reason might be #vegan or #vegggieforlife, these Instagram trends have made
many teenagers consider the hazards that meat and other products cause to nature. They are
becoming more aware of their choices and trying to preserve Mother Nature.
The Body Shop, a famous lifestyle made making organic products made a statement that most
teenagers now want their make up to be organic. Even clothes are being recycled with other
products. There is as one can see a voluntary urge to save the planet.

SO ARE WE DOING OUR BIT OR NOT?
IS NATURE A FORCE FOR US TO SAVE OR IS IT FORCED ON US TO SAVE?
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
